(CROWLEY COUNTY, Colo.) — At Lake Meredith in Crowley County you can swim, camp, and also maybe get a glimpse of a seaplane.

Lake Meredith is Colorado’s first public-use seaplane base, and each year since 2016, the lake has been the location of a “splash-in” event that draws seaplane pilots and enthusiasts from across Colorado.

“Hey, it’s sort of like, well, the antique cars and what have you,” said Ray Hawkins, splash-in organizer. “You bring a lot of antique cars to the parking lot of your favorite restaurant or something like that, and you look at those cars. Well, this is our ability to be able to see planes in action and be able to talk to people about it.”

This year’s splash-in has been postponed from June to September because the planes are being utilized to fight wildfires in the area. Hawkins hopes that the firefighting aircraft will be able to participate at the event in September.
