Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone world record: Sprinter in league of her own in 400-meter hurdles at Olympic trials

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is an Olympian yet again, and she left absolutely no doubt.

McLaughlin-Levrone turned in a dominant showing in the women's 400-meter hurdles final at the Olympic trials on Sunday, setting a world record and beating out the rest of the competition by nearly two full seconds.

A gold medalist in the event at the Tokyo Games three years ago, McLaughlin-Levrone is joined by Anna Cockrell in representing Team USA for the second consecutive Olympics. After a stunning performance on Sunday, nothing other than another gold medal would satisfy the 24-year-old.

    Here's a look at McLaughlin-Levrone's record-setting run in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone 400m hurdles world record

McLaughlin-Levrone ran the 400-meter hurdles final in 50.65 seconds at the USA Olympic trials on Sunday, breaking her own world record.

This is nothing new for McLaughlin-Levrone. She initially set the world record at the Olympic trials in 2021, running a 51.90, and she would go on to break her own record at the Olympics just weeks later when she ran a 51.46 to claim gold. Her USA teammate, Dalilah Muhammad, also beat the 51.90 mark in Tokyo but settled for silver because of McLaughlin-Levrone's outstanding run.

The performance on Sunday shattered her previous record of 51.46 seconds. At 50.65 seconds, McLaughlin-Levrone was in an entirely different realm than fellow Olympic qualifiers Anna Cockrell and Jasmine Jones. While Cockrell and Jones were far behind, their times were so strong that they would have placed fourth in the Olympic final three years ago. That's how dominant McLaughlin-Levrone's run was in Eugene.

McLaughlin-Levrone said after the race that she still aims to run the 400-meter hurdles in under 50 seconds "at some point," and why not? She shed nearly a second off of her own record at the Olympic trials, so another improvement might not be out of the question at all.

McLaughlin-Levrone has a new record, but more than anything, she's seeking more hardware in Paris. The eyes of the world will be on her when she takes to the track at her second Olympic games, and 50.65 seconds is now the time to beat.
