Former women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe refused to answer on Sunday when a journalist asked her to elaborate on her belief that biological male athletes should compete against females in athletic competitions.

Rapinoe was the grand marshal of Seattle’s Pride parade on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Rapinoe was seated in a white BMW convertible with former WNBA player Sue Bird, her partner, and driven along the parade route. While the car was moving, Rapinoe was approached by the Post Millennial journalist Katie Daviscourt and asked about transgender women competing against females.

“Your U.S. women’s soccer team famously lost to high school boys. Do you really think it’s fair for these same boys to be competing in girls sports?” Daviscourt asked.

Rapinoe chuckled at the question before uttering, “My God,” to herself and then reaching for a drink. A security guard then walked up to position himself between Rapinoe and Daviscourt, and Bird put her arm over the retired soccer player. Yet Daviscourt continued with her questions.

“Do you think it’s fair? Why should trans people compete against young girls?” Daviscourt continued. “Why should trans people compete against young girls? Do you not think that they’re gonna get hurt? Are they gonna get hurt? I’m a journalist. I just wanna know.”

Rapinoe did not answer any of Daviscourt’s questions. However, the former Olympian’s silence contrasted with her previous support for transgender women competing in female athletic competitions. In a previous interview, Rapinoe suggested she would support a biological male taking a roster spot of a woman on the United States Women’s National Team if the player identified as a female.

“Absolutely,” she said in an interview with Time in July 2023 . “‘You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument — you’re sort of telling on yourself already — is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”

Rapinoe, 38, is a two-time women’s soccer World Cup champion and an Olympic gold and bronze medalist. She retired in 2023.
