OLY--GYM-US TRIALS MINNEAPOLIS — Simone Biles is heading back to the Olympics. The gymnastics star clinched an automatic spot on the five-woman U.S. team by breezing to victory at the Olympic trials. Biles posted a two-day total of 117.225 in what was essentially a tuneup before the games. The 2016 Olympic champion appears as good as ever at age 27. Biles is returning to the spotlight three years after pulling herself out of multiple finals at the 2020 Games to focus on her mental health. Biles says she isn’t worried about history repeating itself in Paris. By Will Graves. SENT: 1,080 words, photos.

TEN--WIMBLEDON WIMBLEDON, England — The 2024 edition of Wimbledon is scheduled to start with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and past Grand Slam title winners Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu involved in matches at Centre Court. Alcaraz just won his third major championship at the French Open three weeks ago. He defeated Novak Djokovic in last year’s final at Wimbledon. Alcaraz faces qualifier Mark Lajal of Estonia on Monday at the All England Club. Raducanu won the 2021 U.S. Open at age 18, but she has been dealing with various injuries since then. She meets No. 22 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova on Day 1. Gauff closes out the day’s schedule in the main stadium against Caroline Dolehide in an all-American matchup. SENT: 140 words, photos. Play begins at 6 a.m. EDT.

OLY--ATH-US TRIALS EUGENE, Ore. — Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone lowered her world record once again, running the 400-meter hurdles in 50.65 seconds Sunday to win the U.S. Olympic trials. In only her fourth race of the season, the 24-year-old defending Olympic champion cleared all 10 barriers with ease, then went on a dead sprint to the line to break the record for the fifth time, four of which have now come on track at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. She held her hand over her mouth and stared in amazement when she saw the time. The mark was .03 seconds better than her run in the 2022 world championships. By Eddie Pells. SENT: 870 words, photos.

BKN--FREE AGENCY Paul George is leaving the Los Angeles Clippers, his now-former team announced Sunday night, with all signs pointing to the nine-time All-Star perhaps returning to the Eastern Conference and joining the Philadelphia 76ers. George could command more than $200 million over four years if his next contract is for max value. Also, Chris Paul is headed to San Antonio to team up with rookie of the year Victor Wembanyama, James Harden is staying with the Clippers, Kevin Love remains in Miami and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is off to Orlando. BBA--RANGERS-ORIOLES BALTIMORE — Texas Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford has hit for the cycle in Baltimore, completing the feat with a three-run homer down the left-field line in the eighth inning. It was the first career four-hit game for the 22-year-old Langford, who was drafted last year by the Rangers with the No. 4 overall pick and made a swift rise to the majors to make Texas’ opening-day roster this season. It was the first cycle in the major leagues in 2024. Langford tripled in the fourth, doubled in the fifth and singled in the sixth. By Noah Trister. SENT: 400 words, photos.

BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL The major league season has passed its halfway point so award speculation is going to heat up. First-half MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year talk will be plentiful. Here’s another collection of slightly less formal midseason awards. The healthiest home run celebration is Baltimore’s hydration station. The most effective McDonald’s mascot? Grimace, of course! After sparking the New York Mets to a lengthy winning streak last month. By Noah Trister. UPCOMING: 550 words, photos by 6 a.m.

HKN--FREE AGENT LOOKAHEAD The outlook for NHL free agency? “Unpredictable” in the words of one general manager. That is because the salary cap is getting its first significant jump since before the pandemic and this has fast-tracked a one-week offseason that has led to some surprise moves. Hundreds of millions of dollars will be committed to free agents, including a strong crop of forwards led by longtime Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos and 2023 playoff MVP Jonathan Marchessault. More trades are also expected in the coming days and weeks. By Stephen Whyno. SENT: 850 words, photos.

CAR--NASCAR-NASHVILLE LEBANON, Tenn. — Joey Logano stretched his fuel enough to hold off a group of pursuers at the finish line and win the Ally 400 in a NASCAR Cup Series record fifth overtime. Logano held off a charge by Tyler Reddick, then beat Zane Smith, Reddick, Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher to the line. The race at Nashville Superspeedway started nearly six hours earlier and went 31 laps beyond the 300 that were scheduled. It looked like Denny Hamlin had chased down Ross Chastain for his fourth Cup win this year with seven laps left. But Austin Cindric’s crash set up the chaotic finish with Hamlin running out of gas and finishing 12th. By Teresa M. Walker. SENT: 860 words, photos.

GLF--ROCKET MORTGAGE CLASSIC DETROIT — Cam Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the second time, closing with a 2-under 70 that gave him a one-shot victory when Akshay Bhatia three-putted from 32 feet on the final hole. Davis, a 29-year-old Australian, won his first PGA Tour title three years ago at Detroit Golf Club. He pulled into a tie with Bhatia with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole. That proved to be enough when Bhatia’s 4-foot par attempt on the 18th missed low and left for his first three-putt of the week. Davis finished at 18-under 270. Bhatia, Aaron Rai, Davis Thompson and Min Woo Lee all finished one shot back. By Larry Lage. SENT: 660 words, photos.

BKL--MAGIC-CLARK-REESE Magic Johnson is a fan of the comparison between what Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are doing in their rookie year in the WNBA to what he and Larry Bird did for the NBA. He sees a lot of similarities. The two rookies drew unprecedented TV ratings in college and now they are helping the WNBA in attendance and viewership. By Doug Feinberg. UPCOMING: 500 words, photos by 4 p.m.
