John McEnroe was spotted sporting a wig that mirrored his iconic 80s red hairband and curly mop look ahead of Wimbledon.

The American tennis legend is set to return to TV screens as part of the coverage of Wimbledon , which kicks off on Monday. Whether you're a fan of McEnroe's commentary or not, the 65 year old seemed less than thrilled in recent photos.

McEnroe was seen looking rather downcast as he made his way to a court, orange tennis racket in hand and dressed in Nike tennis whites and socks with a black jacket for warmth. It's thought that the three-time Wimbledon champion was recreating his famous look for an advert at a local club.

His appearance was reminiscent of his signature hairstyle when he clinched his first Wimbledon titles in 1979 and 1981. McEnroe claimed victory five times at SW19, adding future wins in 1983, 1984 and 1992 after he had ditched the red headband and trimmed most of his curly, auburn locks.

Ahead of this year's tournament, McEnroe has once again voiced his support for a statue of two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray to be erected in recognition of his contributions to the sport. Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 2013 since Fred Perry in 1936, and he secured a second title in 2016.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, who also clinched his Olympic gold medal at the All England Lawn in 2012, is now racing against time to be fit for this year's Championship. "If I was making that decision, I would say absolutely yes because that's a long drought, 77 years," McEnroe said

"He's absolutely revolutionized how people perceive British tennis. He's one of the fiercest competitors that I've ever seen play tennis. It'd be well deserved and it'd be fantastic, as two of his three Grand Slam victories (2013 and 2016) were at Wimbledon plus the Olympics (gold medal in 2012).'He was part of the 'big four' and he concluded 2016 as the top player globally. It's unfortunate that due to injuries, you don't hear about him in the same way as before. It feels like the 'big three' now."

There's the saying that I've quoted numerous times: 'The older I get, the better I used to be. ' And sadly, when you have injuries, it's pretty damn tough, if not impossible to reach that level where you once were," McEnroe concluded.
