Defiant Biden rejects calls to end his bid for president

Some political pundits and Democratic strategists have urged President Joe Biden, 81, not to accept the Democratic nomination later this summer after he froze and struggled to make his pitch to voters last week , bringing renewed focus and concerns about his age and ability to serve a second term.

Democrats talked all weekend about what to do, sounding off potential alternative contenders and questioning valuable donations ahead of the party's convention in Chicago next month. But the only way Biden goes is if he says so himself.

• "I know how to do this job" : Biden affirmed over the weekend he isn't going anywhere.
• Top Democrats are tuning out the noise and rallying around Biden : Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and former President Barack Obama are some of the party leaders who came forward in support of the president over the weekend, shaking off last week's shaky debate performance.
• Meanwhile, Democrats' panic is looking good for President Donald Trump , who is tamping down on his base as attention swarms his opponent.

Election fever in France and UK this week

While America's election holds the nation's attention, it's also a big moment for two key U.S. allies across the pond. On July 4, America’s Independence Day, Britain is all but certain to vote out the ruling center-right Conservative Party after 14 tumultuous years. Meanwhile, France held the first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday. Opinion polls show the far right could win the two-round legislative vote that concludes on July 7. Read more

Trump immunity ruling here, with timing on his side

The Supreme Court is closing out its term Monday with a decision on its biggest case of year − does Donald Trump have immunity as a former president that prevents him from standing trial on charges he tried to overturn the 2020 election. The trial at stake still has months of pretrial preparation pending, with more delays possible, even if the justices don't throw out the charges — and two other pending criminal trials haven’t even been scheduled. The ruling may already too late to hold any of his three pending criminal trials before the Nov. 5 election. Read more

New York police release footage in fatal shooting of 13-year-old Nyah Mway

Authorities in New York released body camera footage on Sunday showing a police officer fatally shooting Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old boy, after he allegedly aimed an object that was later determined to be a pellet gun during a foot chase on Friday night. The shooting has caused an outpouring of outrage and demands for justice in Utica's Karen immigrant community, an ethnic minority from Southeast Asia. Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil in memory of Nyah on Saturday night. Read more
