Your Wimbledon 2024 queue guide: When time does it open each day?

The season of strawberries and cream, brilliant white outfits, and the quintessential British act of queueing up is upon us.

The Wimbledon 2024 Championships have kicked off today, and up to half a million tennis fans are expected to attend the coveted tournament over the next two weeks.

As we head into tennis season, stellar matches are taking place across all the courts today in what is set to be a sunny few days ahead.

Those not travelling to Wimbledon this year can watch all the live coverage and highlights across the BBC . As for those who want to get a last-minute glimpse at the action live, there’s always The Queue.

Wimbledon is one of the only sporting events in the world where people can bag show court tickets and ground passes on the day of the event.

Now part of Wimbledon’s legacy, it has become a tradition for some people to spend hours lining up to buy tickets for that day’s matches, and it even earns its own coverage during the event.

Last year, up to 12,000 people lined up in Wimbledon Park on a single day, and many camped overnight, to gain entry to Wimbledon.

This year, Wimbledon organizers have warned people not to travel to the championships on Day 1 without pre-bought tickets, explaining it “is very busy and to avoid disappointment we advise you not to travel to the Grounds”.

But fans still have just under two weeks to get in on the fun. Here’s everything you need to know about bagging tickets to this year’s Wimbledon via The Queue.

What time does the queue for Wimbledon open?

The grounds at Wimbledon open at 10am each day, but The Queue can start forming way before sunrise.

The earlier you arrive, the better chance you have of getting the best tickets available that day and not being turned away.

At 6am each morning, stewards wake the people who have been camping and instruct them to form a queue.

At 7:30am, they’ll hand out wristbands to people in The Queue, which correspond to the exact number of show court tickets available that day.

When people arrive and join The Queue, they receive a card that tells them what number they are in the line for and will be instructed to sign up for the Wimbledon app.

When the turnstiles open, tickets also need to be processed one by one, so it will take some time for the line to go down. Make sure you’ve completed all the relevant documentation in the app (and keep hold of your numbered ticket) before you reach the front.

Remember that payments can only be accepted by debit or credit card.

How early do you need to queue for Wimbledon?

As we’ve already mentioned, the earlier, the better.

Some people choose to camp overnight to have the best chance at securing the coveted tickets, while others prefer to stay at an Airbnb or hotel nearby.

If you aim to join The Queue sometime around 5am, you’ve still got a good shot at getting some solid tickets.

Others travel in from other parts of the capital, but this depends on when public transport starts running. The later you arrive, the slimmer your chances are at bagging Centre Court tickets.

However, tennis fans have one more chance to get show court tickets by queuing up yet again to buy returned tickets (if there are any) after 3pm at a discounted price from the Ticket Resale Kiosk.

How many ground passes are there at Wimbledon each day?

There are 500 tickets available each day for Centre Court, No.1 Court, and No.2 Court (except for the remaining 4 days).

People can also buy a Grounds Pass, which gives fans access to the other courts and unreserved seating.

Fans will continue to be let into Wimbledon until the venue has reached capacity.

At a maximum capacity of 42,000, there’s usually plenty of space to purchase a Grounds Pass throughout the day.
