    Three men dead and two more injured including one in a wheelchair after shooting near University of Cincinnati campus as police arrest suspect after stand off

    Three men are dead and two injured after an an early morning shooting near the University of Cincinnati campus.

    Multiple gunshots rang out around 2.50am Monday near East University Avenue and Highland Avenue, Cincinnati police confirmed.

    Officers discovered four victims at the scene, including one in a wheelchair, and a fifth victim was identified after being self-transported to a nearby hospital.

    Two people were taken into custody, including one of the wounded, and multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, police Captain Mark Burns said.

    There was a brief standoff at the scene after an individual ran into a house with a weapon. The suspect was arrested after coming out of the home voluntarily.

    'There were multiple firearms recovered at the crime scene and two subjects (one of which was also shot) are being detained at this time,' Burns told The Associated Press in an email. He said he had no further information.

    Earlier, the university's public safety department posted on the social platform X that police were responding to an emergency shortly before 3am.

    The department later posted it was a shooting and said: 'Be observant/take action as needed.'

    About an hour later, the department issued an 'all clear' message and said 'police will maintain heavy presence.'

    Local news stations reported that officers patrolling Corryville neighborhood early Monday morning when they heard shots fired in the 300 block of East University Avenue.

    Captain Mark Burns said during a media briefing around 5am Monday that officers took one person into custody after the individual ran into a house with a weapon. Burns said there was a standoff with police but the individual did ultimately exit the property voluntarily

    Officers arrived on scene to find several people suffering from gunshot wounds. They said all five shot were men, believed to be adults.

    Burns, during a media briefing around 5am, confirmed that one of the victims had been shot in a wheelchair. One victim is understood to have been shot in the leg, another on the sidewalk and one in a vehicle.

    Police said that one of the victim had been taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, WCPO reported.

    Officers declared one victim dead at the scene and another was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where they were later declared dead.

    Burns said during the briefing that a third man was victim was suspected to be dead. It is unclear when or where he was officially declared deceased.

    The university did issue an emergency alert on social media at 2.54am but had given the all clear by 3.51am. The school noted that police will maintain a heavy presence while they carry out their investigation

    The captain added that a fifth victim was self-transported to a hospital. Their condition remains unknown at this time.

    Burns also told the media that one person at the scene ran into a house with a weapon.

    He said there was a standoff with police but the individual did ultimately exit the property voluntarily.

    It is unclear at this time if the suspect was the shooter, hiding the weapon or connected to the incident in some other way.
