    Century mine catches fire in Barbour County

    UPDATE, JULY 1, 12:30 P.M.:

    VOLGA, W.Va. (WBOY) — The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training sent 12 News the following statement:

    The company is conducting various fire mitigation activities that should continue to suppress this fire.

    The OMHS&T and MSHA will be at the mine location around the clock taking air quality samples from all the mine openings. This will allow for further monitoring of fire activity, (whether it is growing or extinguishing) for example.

    VOLGA, W.Va. (WBOY) — A representative with GMS Mine Repair and Maintenance told a 12 News reporter at the scene that there were no injuries.

    UPDATE, JULY 1, 11:23 A.M.:

    VOLGA, W.Va. (WBOY) — A spokesperson from the Department of Labor confirmed to 12 News that the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has opened and is conducting an ongoing investigation of the mine fire.


    ORIGINAL, JULY 1, 9:10 A.M.:

    VOLGA, W.Va. (WBOY) — A fire broke out in the Century Mining Longview Mine in Volga on Sunday, Barbour County 911 officials confirmed to 12 News.

    At around 11 a.m. on Sunday, a fire in the mine was reported; 911 officials said the inside of the mine caught fire when something ignited, though they were unsure what ignited.

    911 officials said they did not know the current status of the fire—whether the fire is still ongoing nor the possible extent of damage caused—as of Monday morning, and they could not provide any further information.

    12 News has reached out to the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s field office in Morgantown but was directed to the press hotline, which directs callers to contact them via email. 12 News sent an email requesting more information but has not received a reply at this time.
