Know the fireworks laws in Arizona this Fourth of July

Arizona allows the sale and use of some fireworks this week in celebration of the Fourth of July , but the rules are complicated and violating them could cost you.

The big picture: Arizona only permits certain ground-based fireworks on a few days per year around Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Diwali, Christmas and New Year's Eve.

    • Violation fines vary by city but can run up to $1,500.

State of play: The sale and use of fountains, spinners and sparkling wheel devices is permitted now through July 6. You must be 16 or older to purchase fireworks.

Between the lines: Aerial fireworks, like rockets and Roman candles, are never allowed.

    • Sparklers and other novelty items like poppers, snakes and smoke cones are allowed year-round.

Zoom in: State law also prohibits firework use between 11pm and 8am, except on Fourth of July and New Year's Eve, when they're allowed until 1am the following morning.

Reality check: Very few people are actually cited for improper firework use, despite hundreds of calls to police about possible violations, ABC15 reported last year.

    • That may be because police actually have to witness the use of illegal fireworks to issue a ticket, the station found.

Be smart: The city of Chandler offers these tips for safely and courteously enjoying fireworks this week:

    • Choose an open, outdoor area with no nearby hazards.
    • Seek permission if you plan to light fireworks somewhere other than your own property.
    • Talk with your neighbors and consider their comfort and well-being.

Be really smart: Don't forget to properly dispose of the fireworks after you've had your fun.

    • The town of Gilbert recommends soaking used fireworks in water for 24 hours and double-wrapping them in plastic bags before throwing them in your trash bin. Make sure the bin is not in your garage and is 3 feet away from any structures.
