France and Belgium’s talent-stacked sides played out a goalless first half in their Euro 2024 last-16 clash in Dusseldorf.

Both teams were short of their best during the group stages, each qualifying as runners-up, and changed formations and personnel from head coaches Didier Deschamps and Domenico Tedesco did not yield the most fluent contest.

Kevin De Bruyne discomforted France goalkeeper Mike Maignan with a 24th-minute free-kick that he booted out of his goalmouth in ungainly fashion, but Belgium’s captain struggled to influence proceedings significantly after Tedesco surprisingly deployed him centrally in a 4-4-2 formation.

Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann each had bright moments but Les Bleus’ best chance went to fellow forward Marcus Thuram, who headed Jules Kounde's excellent cross wide at the near post in the 34th minute.

France vs. Belgium live updates, highlights from Euro 2024

56 mins : Ohhhh, Mbappe will be unhappy about that. Koude finds him with a low ball into the box but he scuffs wide from about 14 yards.

55 mins : Doku tries to change the complexion, as he did in the first half. Koude stands firm and blocks the cross.

54 mins : Mbappe weaves in off the flank, Castagne and De Bruyne can't get near him, and he lashes just over the bar.

50 mins : De Bruyne can only head Griezmann's free-kick to Koude. He finds Thuram once more but the Inter forward makes a mess of it. Not as clear a headed chance as the one he had in the first half but another good one.

49 mins : That's a fine save from Casteels! Tchouameni lines up his latest effort from distance, this one is more controlled, deflected off Faes and the Belgium keeper is at full stretch to tip around the post. The corner comes to nought.

47 mins : De Bruyne chips one into the channel and Lukaku has a first real chance to grapple with Saliba. The France defender wins that tussle.

    Kickoff : 2nd Half

Off we go again. No changes just yet.

    Halftime

Both teams huffed and puffed during that first half, with France the more coherent side. Whether it's Doku at one end or Mbappe at the other, it's felt like a contest waiting to be decided by individual magic. Both squads are better than that and Deschamps and Tedesco have 15 minutes to get to work.

45 mins : Tchouameni...over! France take the corner short and soon enough Mbappe is giving Doku a taste of his own medicine with a mazy, tenacious dribble. The ball breaks to Tchouameni, who batters it over. He really should have hit the target.

44 mins : De Bruyne, who has toiled without much reward in his deeper midfield position, looks to press Rabiot and gives away a foul, much to his annoyance. France go up the other end and win a corner.

39 mins : Another frantic, shapeless passage of play ends with Tchouameni smashing a shot just over from 30 yards. Pretty good try, would have been a goal of the tournament contender if he'd pulled it off.

37 mins : Unsurprisingly given the team Deschamps picked, all of France's width is coming from their fullbacks. Hernandez gets down towards the byline and it's a teasing low cross, but Thuram is on his heels.

34 mins : Big chance for Thuram! Raking ball out to Kounde and he gets the cross spot-on to the near post. Thuram gets in front of his marker but heads wide.

32 mins : Hernandez blazes a cross nowhere near anyone from a good position on the left. The lack of quality so far is slightly maddening given the calibre of players on display.

26 mins : Doku is in the thick of it again. He's almost single-handedly driven France onto the back foot. The Manchester City man cuts back to Carrasco, whose shot is blocked. Claims for handball but you're not getting that, even in 2024.

24 mins : Woooaahhh! De Bruyne's free-kick dips over the wall. Maignan appears to completely misread it and boots it off his goalline. Which is ultimately effective, I guess. Now Rabiot clumps through Doku. He's also booked and will miss the quarterfinal if France get there.

23 mins : Doku can be difference-maker for Belgium and he has Kounde backpedalling. Griezmann comes to help out with a very late challenge. He's booked and De Bruyne is over a free-kick just outside the left corner of the box.

22 mins : Openda takes the ball on his chest, can't make the pass. Belgium are attacking at every opportunity but there's no pattern to their play. France are as circumspect as we've come to expect under Deschamps, but they'll know the chances will come.

14 mins : France work a corner short and Mbappe fires goalwards. It quite clearly deflects behind off Openda but the officials give a goal kick.Mbappe and Tchouameni take it up with the referee and the new dissent rules mean Tchouameni is booked.

12 mins : Griezmann releases Kounde into the Belgium box with a lovely reverse pass. It's a fine run from the full-back but he can't pick anyone out with his cutback.

9 mins : Belgium struggling to establish any sort of control of possession at the moment. Tedesco has picked a side that is very forward-looking, very verticle. But they need to get into this game. Griezmann tries a shot from outside the box but doesn't get hold of it and Casteels gathers.

3 mins : A scampering Openda gives Upamecano his first examination and the France centre-back comes through it.

2 mins : Positive start from France. Mbappe and Griezmann into their work and Rabiot clips a speculative volley wide.

    Kickoff: 1st Half

We're underway. It looks like a 4-4-2 for Belgium with Lukaku and Openda up front.

4 mins before kickoff: The teams are out and it's anthems time. Huge boos for La Marseillaise from the Belgian contingent. The France fans sing loudly in response. Lively atmosphere.

25 mins before kickoff : It really does feel like a bold teamsheet from Tedesco. A feature of the 0-0 draw against Ukraine was the Belgium midfield getting played through at will. Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemens looked overwhelmed at times. Going through the names on in that starting lineup, even more of the defensive burden will fall upon Onana. France have looked timid so far. Will an expansive Belgium lineup catch them cold or leave the spaces in which the likes of Griezmann and Mbappe can thrive.

50 mins before kickoff : And here's the Belgium XI. Hmmm, could be a back three but if Tedesco has gone with a 4-3-3 that's a very attacking lineup.

1 hour before kickoff : The teams are in. This is what the France XI looks like. Marcus Thuram joins Mbappe in attack. It looks like Griezmann will operate as a number 10.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff : Confirmed team news will be along shortly and the main talking point is whether Didier Deschamps will revert to pragmatic type. Antoine Griezmann has thrived after being re-imagined as a creative midfielder at international level and the Atletico Madrid man in a central three with two wide attackers either side of Kylian Mbappe could be a treat. However, Deschamps also likes to deploy more of  a "shuttling" wide midfielder in games against elite opposition. Blaise Matuidi did this job on the way to World Cup glory in Russia and Adrien Rabiot could be earmarked for it here, allowing for the extra central midfield insurance of Aurelien Tchouameni alongside N'Golo Kante.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff : Mbappe, Griezmann, Dembele, Doku, De Bruyne, Lukaku... it's some array of talent on show in Dusseldorf, but both teams have been less than the sum of their parts so far at this tournament. When they met in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup — there are a number of survivors from that game in both squads — France eeked out a nervy 1-0 win. Are we set for more of the same of will the relatively lower stakes of an early stage knockout game help to ignite a classic?

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of France against Belgium at Euro 2024. If these teams can both improve upon their group-stage efforts we could be in for a treat!

France vs. Belgium lineups, team news, starting 11

Didier Deschamps has no major roster issues to deal with ahead of the Round of 16 match. The France has his entire squad at his disposal. Star forward Kylian Mbappe completed the full 90 minutes against Poland with no reactions after returning from a broken nose.

With his protective mask on, Real Madrid star Mbappe finally opened his account at the Euros at the third attempt, dispatching a penalty early in the second half before Poland were awarded a spot-kick of their own.

Mbappe is joined in attack by Marcus Thuram , with Antoine Griezmann set to operate behind the front two.

    France starting lineup (4-3-1-2 right to left): 16. Maignan (GK) —  5. Kounde, 17. Saliba, 4. Upamecano, 22. Hernandez —  13. Kante, 8. Tchouameni, 14. Rabiot — 7. Griezmann — 15. Thuram, 10. Mbappe.

Belgium also have no fresh injury issues to contend with, meaning Axel Witsel (adductor) and Thomas Meunier (thigh) remain the only two injury absentees for Domenico Tedesco's side.

Tedesco has rung the changes on the back of the stalemate with Ukraine.

RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda joins Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku in an exciting front three. Kevin De Bruyne and Yannick Carrasco are also in from the start, meaning plenty of the defensive burden in midfield will fall on Amadou Onana .

    Belgium starting lineup (4-3-3 right to left): 1. Casteels (GK) — 21. Castagne, 4. Faes, 5. Vertonghen, 3. Theate — 7. De Bruyne 24. Onana, 11. Carrasco —20. Openda, 10. Lukaku, 22. Doku.
