ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Albemarle County emergency responders are providing safety reminders ahead of the Fourth of July.

Albemarle County’s public safety departments remind the public that only certain fireworks are legal in the county. At-home fireworks displays can’t rise off or shoot across the ground, cannot explode and are only allowed to be used on private property.

In addition, the county urges that folks who opt to use fireworks always have adult supervision, never aim fireworks at another person or building, have a water source nearby, never re-light a firework, only use one firework at a time and keep their distance from others after it is lit.

Alternative, but still patriotic celebratory options to fireworks recommended by the county include glow sticks or flashing lights, red, white and blue silly string, a birthday cake for the U.S., or an indoor movie night with a screen and a projector.

In addition to celebrating safely, the county reminds drivers to stay safe on the road during increased traffic for the holiday.

Drivers are asked to buckle up, avoid rushing, check road conditions at the Virginia Department of Transportation’s website , keep space between their car and the one in front of them, avoid distracted or drowsy driving, and plan to have a designated driver or use a driving service if they plan to drink.
