When Kate Middleton first met Prince William as college students at St. Andrews University, royal watchers would have never believed the stunning Art History major would be the person who “ saved the crown .” However, the Princess of Wales has always been made of “tougher stuff ,” says a royal commentator.

Kate Middleton became the jolt of electricity the House of Windsor needed

Daniela Elser of News.com.au discussed how Kate Middleton became one of the most important members of the royal family. Historically, royal watchers would have never believed Kate would have such an impact on the crown when she was revealed as William’s then-girlfriend in 2004.

Elser claims, “It was 19 years ago this week when either Carole or Michael [Middleton] picked up a camera and snapped a photo that will still appear in holographic textbooks a century from now. In it, two freshly graduated university students sweetly have their arms around one another, relaxed, delighted, and affectionate. Moreover – normal.”

“From our perspective, nearly 20 years after Carole or Michael took that graduation photo, I think we can confidently say that the monarchy would be well and truly stuffed if William had not had the foresight and the heart-shaped eyes to latch onto Kate. And she had not had the maturity and the groundedness to stick with him through all the trials and tribulations and requirements to wear scratchy tweed,” the commentator continued.

“There is a story that goes around semi-regularly, that when William and Kate were in their 20s and dating, someone was enthusing about how lucky she was to have snaffled the affections of a prince. Kate reportedly replied, ‘he’s lucky to be dating me.’ Too right.”

She concluded, “Lucky Kate hung in there. Lucky that she was and is made of tougher stuff. What that 2005 photo captures is the crown, whether it knew it or not, being quietly saved.”

As Kate Middleton found herself amid a firestorm surrounding her relationship with Prince William, she may have wondered, at times, if the relationship was “worth it.” Royal commentator Daniela Elser weighed in on those remarks.

“Walking down the street, grocery shopping, heading out for a drink with friends, at train stations and airports. Kate was valuable prey. She was hunted and hounded and harried across the well-to-do bits of London; while also being maliciously labeled ‘Waity Katie.'” Elser wrote.

“There must have been no end of moments of frustration, sadness, loneliness, anger, and misery. Kate must have wondered, is this guy worth it?” the royal commentator asked.

However, Kate persevered. While their relationship had its ups and downs, Kate and William maintained a private romance, which culminated in an engagement in a very special spot to the prince.
