LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Ingham County Republicans are scrambling to find a candidate for the Ingham County Commission representing Delhi Township. That’s after the candidate who is on the ballot, David Webber, died last week.

Ingham County Republican Party Co-Chair Norm Shinkle tells 6 News Webber had been battling melanoma cancer, but the candidate and party thought he was clear. Webber passed away June 22, an obituary reports .

The seat is currently held by Democrat Chris Trubac who is seeking re-election for the Third District of the County Commission.

Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum says she has not been formally notified of the death. But says county Republicans now have two options.

The first choice is a candidate steps up and files as a write-in candidate for the position against Webber. That candidate would have to get more votes than Webber in order to move on to the November election.

Byrum says that is an unlikely choice.

The second choice is for the county party to nominate a person to run for the seat in November and notify her no less than 60 days before the Nov. 6 election.

Shinkle tells 6 News the party is currently looking for a candidate to replace Webber.

“The goal is to find somebody that wants to win,” he says. “Delhi is an important township.”
