It may be several days before Monroe County government’s computer server will be back in commission. Local offices were closed Monday and will be again on Tuesday.

County attorney Jeff Cockerill said the county technical services department is working on the problem and county officials intend to bring in outside analysts to investigate and fix whatever is wrong.

Cockerill couldn’t provide many details about the server situation. “We are planning on getting some help in that direction,” he said, “have a professional firm come in and determine what happened. What I know is our computer network isn’t working correctly and our technical support staff is looking into it.”

He said it’s unlikely recent storm-related power outages are to blame. And didn’t rule out the possibility of outside sources infiltrating the county’s secure computer network.

“I don’t think it’s related to the power outage issues,” he said when asked about possible causes. “And obviously, there is some concern there may be some bad actor in there, but we can’t identify anything now.”

Cockerill said it’s not known when county offices, closed Monday morning after the issue was discovered, will reopen for workers and the public. For now, just sheriff’s deputies and officers, jail staff and highway workers are on the job.

“I don’t want to say for certain (when county offices will reopen,) but I can say our technical services head was not optimistic the server would be back up by the Fourth of July,” Cockerill said. “Sometimes that’s the way it is in the world of computers.”

He said county workers depend on computers. “The bulk of our staff cannot do very much without them.”

Computer issues have shut down most Monroe County government offices today.

"We are experiencing a government-wide server outage, the cause of which is being determined," commissioners' president Julie Thomas said just before noon Monday. She said she hopes to have more information later in the day.

The only offices not affected by the sudden closure, announced Monday morning, are the jail, sheriff's department and highway department, where workers remain on the job.

A message from the Monroe County commissioners' office said that "due to unforeseen circumstances," the offices were closed. It instructed county employees the time off "will be coded as emergency time."

Court personnel were instructed to contact their supervisors "for direction."
