Pickett’s Mill Brings School Spirit to New Kindergarteners' Doorsteps

Rising kindergarten students already feel like part of the Pickett’s Mill Elementary School family thanks to a recent visit by their principals.

In a beloved tradition now in its fourth year, Principal Dr. Benji Morrell and Assistant Principal Blair Ivey recently visited the homes of incoming kindergarteners to personally welcome them to the Pickett’s Mill family and get the new students excited for the start of school on Aug. 1.

This year, the principals visited around 90 homes, marking the most visits they have ever conducted. Normally, they visit between 65-70 homes, but this year's increased number reflects the school’s growing community and dedication to making each new student feel special.

Smiles filled the doorways of the homes as the principals handed the new students their own Pickett’s Mill t-shirt. The principals chatted with their newest students, answered their questions and snapped a photo to capture the memory of the student’s first moment as a Pickett’s Mill pirate.

For students who were not home, the principals left their welcome surprise for when they return. This way all the new Pickett’s Mill pirates are ready to kick off the new school year with their school spirit wear.

Pickett’s Mill is not the only Cobb elementary school pumping up the excitement for their newest students. Across the District, elementary schools have been actively welcoming rising kindergarten students. Some hosted visits before the school year ended, while others are preparing summer visits and camps. These welcome events, such as Addison Elementary School's tour led by Principal Jill Spiva and kindergarten teacher Arielle Schmidt, are designed to help Cobb’s youngest learners start their educational journey on a positive note. During their visit, Addison’s future Gators explored classrooms, enjoyed cookies from the café and even tried out Cobb County's big yellow school bus.

From camps to popsicle playdates, summer learning and fun awaits rising kindergartners at schools like Teasley Elementary School, Belmont Hills Elementary School, Cheatham Hill Elementary School, Sanders Elementary School, Russell Elementary School and others.
