LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a rise in skin cancer cases in Arkansas, and excessive exposure to the sun is one way to get it.

Dr. Caroline Kim from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences warns that with increased temperatures across the state, it is important to protect the body’s largest organ, the skin.

Kim says drinking a lot of water will hydrate the skin and act as a protective barrier, as well as a proper diet, and surprisingly, rest also plays a role in preventing skin cancer.

Dr. Kim also emphasized a key component to applying at least 30 SPF sunscreen regardless of skin complexion.

Research shows that many people with darker skin tones often think they are not at risk of skin cancer. According to Dr. Kim, that is just a myth, and all complexions need protection from the sun to lower the risk of skin cancer with the use of sunscreen.

She also recommended reapplying sunscreen every two to three hours, depending on how long you will be exposed to the sun.
