Vice President Kamala Harris’s appearance at the BET Awards did not appear to go over well with some viewers, with many on social media saying it was “cringe.”

Harris’s appearance was made in a pre-taped video paid for by the Biden campaign , which aired during the awards show celebrating black celebrities and entertainers. During the video, BET Awards host Taraji P. Henson discussed her worries about the November election, citing concerns about abortion access and how “our basic freedoms are being tested.”

"Yeah, girl, I'm out here in these streets. And let me tell you, you're right, Taraji,” Harris responded. “There is so much at stake in this moment. The majority of us believe in freedom and equality. But these extremists, as they say, 'They not like us.'"

Many users on social media did not react well to the ad, specifically over Harris's "in these streets" comment. X owner Elon Musk also rebuked the ad, saying it had a “toenail curling level of cringe.”

Henson appeared on ABC's The View last month, during which she said that “there is an agenda” to remove Juneteenth as a holiday . She stressed the need for people to “show up and fight” for keeping the holiday.

Ahead of the 2024 election, Trump’s campaign has made a noticeable effort to win over black voters, including a visit to Detroit in mid-June. A Marist College poll conducted from June 3 to June 6 in Pennsylvania, a major battleground state, found President Joe Biden leading Trump 68% to 23% among black voters — a more narrow lead compared to Biden’s performance in 2020, when he won with 92% of black voters’ support.
