HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – According to the American Red Cross, seven people die in house fires, every day. Most often in homes without working smoke alarms.

However, working smoke alarms can cut the risk of house fire death in half.

That’s why the Red Cross, a partner agency of the United Way of Madison County, installs smoke alarms for free for people who need them.

The Red Cross launched its Home Fire Campaign in 2014 with the goal of saving lives.

Through a program called Sound the Alarm, staff and volunteers do home visits where they install the 10-year smoke alarms at no cost to the resident.

The organization said the program has installed 2.8 million smoke alarms, saved 2,102 lives and made nearly 1.2 million households safer.
