Portugal vs. Slovenia final score, result: Ronaldo's tears turn to triumph after penalty miss at Euro 2024

Portugal edged into the Euro 2024 quarterfinals by the thinnest of margins after an emotion-filled penalty shootout win for their star man Cristiano Ronaldo against Slovenia in the Round of 16.

Ronaldo missed one penalty in extra time, which reduced him to tears, before stepping up again to show remarkable character in a shootout after the game had ended 0-0, as one of the tournament favourites somehow found a way to win.

While CR7 faltered, his teammate Diogo Costa thrived. Portugal keeper Costa kept out Benjamin Sesko in extra time and the Porto stopper then saved three Slovenia spot kicks in the shootout to rescue his team from embarrassment in Frankfurt.

Ronaldo will now lead Portugal against France on July 5 in Hamburg after a rollercoaster night for the veteran superstar.

Slovenia had earlier produced an incredible defensive display to frustrate Portugal across 90 minutes, to drag the game through extra time, and then on to penalties.

On a night of stubborn resilience from the underdogs, chances were few and far between for Portugal, with Ronaldo denied by Jan Oblak in the dying seconds of normal time.

There was to be another twist in the Ronaldo vs. Oblak battle, as the Atletico Madrid keeper brilliantly saved his penalty in extra time, with Ronaldo unable to hold back tears as the game headed towards a penalty showdown.
