From July 4 through July 6, the Operation Dry Water weekend will be recognized nationally to try to put a stop to boating under the influence.

According to the release, BUI is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths and injuries.

“We’re here to promote essential safety practices like wearing life jackets and taking boater education courses,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said in the release. “ ODNR is dedicated to ensuring every boater has a safe and fun time. Stay sober, stay alert, and enjoy your time on the water!”

“Participating law enforcement agencies will also work to identify and remove dangerous and impaired operators,” the release said.

In 2023 alone, 717 impaired boaters were removed from waterways by law enforcement during Operation Dry Water weekend nationwide.
