Babies learn so much during the first few years of their lives, but acquiring and developing new skills isn't always easy. Whether they're figuring out how to crawl or walk or talk, it's a process of trial and error. Luckily, the mistakes they make along the way are usually pretty adorable!

In one hilarious video, a baby girl is trying to drink water from an open cup for the first time...and she's a little bit confused. Is she supposed to bite the cup? Put the whole thing in her mouth? Maybe all of the above?

"Well, at least some of the water got in her mouth," wrote @reaganandhaddyn . She definitely tried her best! The fact that she went straight to biting suggests that she might be teething, as some commenters pointed out. Other viewers suggested trying a sippy cup or a straw instead, but experts say the earlier you start teaching your little one how to drink from a regular cup, the better!

When Can Babies Learn to Drink From an Open Cup?

"Whether introducing an open cup as an alternative to the breast or bottle, or transitioning from a sippy to an open cup, doing it earlier rather than later has its advantages," according to What to Expect.

"For one, as a baby, your child will learn that there’s a route to liquid refreshment other than the breast or bottle, an alternative that will make it easier to wean him from either or both. The ability to drink from a real cup also helps your little one gain mastery over his mouth muscles, while fostering his motor skills and coordination."

While there's no right time to introduce an open cup with no lid to your toddler, most kids can drink from one without making too much of a mess by around 16 or 17 months. You can start practicing between 6 and 12 months.

But should you start with a sippy cup first? Ultimately, it's a "matter of parental preference."

"Some experts advise against the sippy cup habit and instead recommend introducing an open cup right from the start. But if you prefer to ease the transition with a spill-proof cup, or if sippy cups have already become a firm fixture in your home, don’t worry that your child has missed a milestone. You can still make the transition to the big-kid cup."
