KDOT prohibits political campaign signs on state highway right of way

KANSAS (KOAM) -- The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is reminding people that all political campaign signs or billboards are not allowed to be placed on the state highway right of way.

According to KDOT, all right of way on state highways is exclusively for public purposes. When KDOT crews find political signs on state highway right of way, the signs will be removed without notice and taken to the closest KDOT Subarea office. Signs not retrieved from the offices will be disposed of after the election.

The department says placement of campaign signs on city or county owned right of way does not apply to state highway right of way, because of a state law passed in 2015.

Political campaign advertising is allowed on private property bordering state right of way; however, people placing or erecting signs on private property must have permission from the property owner.
