Former Army doctor sentenced for duct-taping his wife to a pole in basement

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (TCN) -- A 61-year-old man already serving time for sexually assaulting a woman will spend 30 years in prison for also attacking his wife in September 2020.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano announced former Army doctor Drew Steiner’s sentencing guidelines on June 28 for abduction with intent to defile, malicious wounding, and attempted rape. He will have to serve three years of supervision and register as a sex offender following his release.

According to WRC-TV, during the trial, Steiner’s wife said Steiner asked to come out of quarantine after getting over COVID-19. She reportedly testified that her husband held her to the bed. She allegedly told him, "Please, I don’t feel well. I can’t breathe," and he responded, "That’s the point."

Steiner’s wife told jurors her husband used a sandal to continuously beat her, but she tried to fight back.

According to Descano, Steiner later duct-taped his wife to a pole in their basement amid the dispute. Steiner’s wife eventually escaped from the basement and called for help.

Steiner is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in a separate case for sexually assaulting a woman he had met online in 2020. A jury convicted him in November 2022 of rape, unlawful filming, and abduction with intent to defile.

According to prosecutors, Steiner previously worked as a doctor at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

In a statement, Descano said, "Mr. Steiner committed a series of attacks in late 2020, and this sentencing is the end of a painful saga for everyone involved."
