As the summer season has arrived, so have complaints about trespassing around creeks and streams in Texas County. The classifications of public and private access areas can be confusing to people.

We are fortunate to have several public access areas in Texas County maintained by the Missouri Department of Conservation and United States Forest Service. I would point citizens with questions to an excellent article by the Missouri Department of Conservation about the different categories of streams https://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/regulations/trespassing .

Public navigable streams are capable of commercial boat traffic. All of the streams in Texas County are considered either private non-navigable or public non-navigable. If you attempt to access a stream from a point that is not MDC or Forest Service property there is a good chance that you are trespassing on private property. Be respectful of property rights and seek permission from the property owner before entering these areas.

On June 14 (Flag Day), I attended a flag retirement ceremony and fallen soldier memorial dedication at the Summersville VFW. The memorial is a reminder of the price of freedom in our country. We have some very appropriate and respectful memorials located in our local communities dedicated to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. As we celebrate our country’s independence, I encourage you to visit these sites and read the names of those that have helped to keep our country free. If you have spent much time in Texas County I guarantee you’ll see family names on these monuments that you recognize.

Texas County deputies have investigated several thefts and burglaries east of Licking on Highway 32 in the area near the intersection of Kitchem Drive. There is a picture of the suspect on our Facebook page (Texas County Sheriff). As of July 1, this is still an active investigation and I encourage everyone to check out the post and see if anything looks familiar about the person in the pictures.

June 29 marked the Houston Summer Festival and Independence Day parade. It was a hot summer day, but I think a good crowd enjoyed the events. I had a good time visiting with folks and throwing some candy in the parade. A number of people captured amazing photos later that evening of the fireworks shows with lightning in the background. Texas County deputies assisted the Houston Police Department with traffic control and security. I normally visit with the police chiefs for each of the city police departments in Texas County on a weekly basis to coordinate events and discuss crime trends. A review of reports for June includes 13 domestic violence incidents, seven stealing/burglary incidents and several other offenses with 47 total reports for the month.
