HAYWOOD COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A prominent figure in the North Carolina search and rescue community died in a bicycle crash on Wednesday morning.

According to the Haywood County Search and Rescue, Bill Zimmerman was riding his bicycle when a squirrel ran out from the side of the road and into his bike. This caused the bike to crash.

Officials said Zimmerman suffered from catastrophic injuries to his cervical spine and went into cardiac arrest immediately after the accident.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Following his death, many of his organs were donated to other people.

Zimmerman was the president and founder of the WNC Wilderness Safety Fund.
