YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Humane agents say while the Fourth of July is a time of celebration for many, it’s their busiest week of the year.

Agents with Animal Charity of Ohio say in addition to the number of abuse and neglect cases, they also see a rise in pets getting loose from their owners and homes because of fear over fireworks in their neighborhoods. They say owners need to be taking extra care of their pets this time of year.

“If you have a dog that is at home, you should stay home with them, especially during this time. Practice keeping radios on and TVs on at a louder volume, having a safe place for your dog to go within the house to retreat,” said Jan MacMurchy, with Animal Charity of Ohio.

Agents suggest avoiding taking pets outside while fireworks are being set off. But if you do have to go out, be sure to keep the animals securely on a leash or harness they can’t escape from.
