Electric vehicle owners might be hitting the brakes on future purchases as almost half of them in the United States want to buy a gas-powered car as their next vehicle, according to a new survey.

Australia was the only country with a higher percentage of EV owners wishing for a return to gas-powered cars, with their statistic at 49%, according to McKinsey and Company's Mobility Consumer Pulse Survey for 2024.

The biggest driver of this desire to ditch EVs stems from a lack of available charging areas, with 40% of respondents saying there are not enough chargers along highways and main roads. McKinsey said satisfaction with charging availability "still has a long way to go" across the world, even though this has improved since last year’s report.

Other major concerns EV owners have include the cost of owning an EV being too high, at 34%, and driving patterns on long-distance trips changing too much because of EVs, at 32%.

There are more than 64,000 public EV charging stations in the U.S. However, a study from Harvard University released last month found that 1 in 5 charging stations for EVs is considered faulty .

AAA's most recent annual consumer survey said 63% of adults would be unlikely or very unlikely to purchase a fully electric vehicle, up 10% from last year. Only 18% said they would be likely or very likely to purchase an electric vehicle, down from 23% last year.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced the “Free Market Drives Itself Act” in June to eliminate the Electric Vehicle Working Group in an effort to reduce spending on EVs. The lawmaker told the Washington Examiner that these vehicles are not “a practical choice for Americans” and criticized the Biden administration for trying to force “green transportation” on people.
