LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Fourth of July is this Thursday, but do you know Michigan’s fireworks laws? Here’s what you need to know to avoid trouble this weekend.

How you can celebrate Independence Day in mid-Michigan

Statewide, the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act allows Michiganders to set off consumer fireworks from June 29–July 4 between 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., and on July 5th (if that day falls on a Friday or Saturday) between 11 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Local governments are not allowed to enact any ordinances that contradict state law, though they may regulate the use of fireworks outside of this time.

Consumer fireworks are defined in the Act as “fireworks devices that are designed to produce visible effects by combustion.” These include devices such as aerials, roman candles, missile rockets, bottle rockets, and tube devices.

The Fireworks Safety Act does not apply to novelty or low-impact fireworks with less than 500g of explosives. These include devices such as hand or ground-based sparklers, sparkling wheel devices, snakes, and snappers.

It is illegal for fireworks to be used on public property, school property, church property, or another individual’s property without explicit permission to do so. It is also illegal to use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Fireworks can not be sold to minors.

A violation of the Fireworks Safety Act can lead to a $1000 fine and confiscation of an individual’s fireworks.
