JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Some Hinds County supervisors are at odds over how the former military entrance processing building should be repurposed and renovated.
During a meeting, supervisors approved changing the name to the Hinds County Administration building.
Part of the building is a voting precinct, but some supervisors want it to be more than that. Some supervisors want the building to be the new home of the Election Commission, but election officials said it would be a logistical nightmare if they tried to move before a major election.
Hinds County supervisors rescind votes to merge precincts “It is within their power. Do we recognize that they do have the authority to move us? It is their responsibility for our location, for us. But I just want to let them know that anything would not be a good idea before the election. And I’ve gotten some positive feedback about it. So, I think it’s going to be good,” said Hinds County Election Commissioner Yvonne R. Horton, District 4.
“Right now, we don’t have a master plan, and we need to have a master plan before we just start doing things. In other words, when you start building buildings, when you start renovating buildings, and you don’t have a master plan or a plan as to what you’re going to do, it usually winds up with a misuse of funds,” said Supervisor Robert Graham, District 1.
The building currently sits in District 5, which is under Supervisor Bobby McGowan. He believes the supervisors are overstepping and interfering with the affairs of another district.
