19-year-old killed in apparent accidental shooting in Florence County, coroner says

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A 19-year-old Florence man died Saturday night in a shooting that authorities said appears to have been accidental.

Billy James Matthews III died in the shooting at a home on Wrenfield Road, according to Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken. An autopsy is planned for this week at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Another person was hurt in the incident, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, but no information about their condition was immediately available.

Matthews was charged with attempted murder in 2022 after he allegedly shot into a Florence County home. His charges were still pending in the case, public records show.
