SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is advising travelers to expect increased volumes of traffic for the Fourth of July holiday period.

The Fourth of July is historically one of the biggest travel weekends of the year, and this year is expected to be no different. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has created a traffic forecast for the holiday weekend.

Wednesday, July 3rd is expected to be the busiest travel day. On July 4th, drivers should avoid morning travel, and July 5th, traffic is expected to be heaviest midday. Travelers should expect delays and are encouraged to plan ahead by checking their GPS.

“We’re prepared to take our time, so as long as it takes. We’re kind of taking it easy and enjoying the ride, especially with five kids. So… plenty of snacks,” said Jordan and Stephanie Cerny of Augusta, Maine.

If traveling, MassDOT recommends using real time travel tools and checking departure times based on available information.

AAA Senior Spokesperson Mark Schieldrop told 22News that although after the weekend, commuters and travelers alike should plan ahead for next Monday as well, “A lot of folks are actually going to be traveling Monday, so it looks like people are taking Monday off so you can really extend the weekend and then they would travel on what would normally be a regular work day. But the thing is, Monday is still a regular busiest day, so I think the morning commute and the afternoon commute on Monday could be a bit busier than normal after those travelers are making their way home, mixing with that commuter traffic.”

Schieldrop also told 22News that another way to navigate traffic is by setting a planned arrival time so your GPS can recommend a departure time. If traveling out of state, check state department of transportation websites for specific updates as well.

If you are traveling this weekend, look out for your fellow travelers to ensure a safe and happy Fourth of July.
