The United States men entered the match at Arrowhead Stadium knowing they needed to spring an upset against Uruguay to keep their 2024 Copa America hopes alive.

Instead, it ended in heartbreak for the United States, embarrassingly eliminated from the competition in the group stage, and they only have themselves to blame.

A physical, roller-coaster match ended as a 1-0 win for Uruguay as Matias Olivera’s controversial goal won it for the South American side.

Horrendous refereeing was at the heart of the game story, as inexperienced Kevin Ortega made multiple nonsensical, almost scandalous decisions throughout the 90 minutes, but thanks to Panama’s two-goal win over Bolivia, it boils down to another failure by Gregg Berhalter’s side against top teams from outside CONCACAF.

86th min: Chance, USA! Oh no, the U.S. are so close to an equalizer, but Haji Wright shoots into the forest of defenders instead of passing to a wide-open Ricardo Pepi! It's a massive missed opportunity in a game that needs a goal!

69th min: Yunus Musah is withdrawn for Josh Sargent. Meanwhile, Panama retake the lead over Bolivia. This has gone from bad to worse for the United States.

66th min: GOAL! Uruguay! A set-piece cuts the U.S. apart and Uruguay lead! A free-kick delivery from the right sees a header directed on frame, which forces Matt Turner to make a wonderful save. Unfortunately, he palms it right into the path of to Matias Olivera who has an easy tap-in!

BUT NO! VAR is checking, and it appears Olivera is offside on the initial header! A lifeline for the United States!

The referee takes FOREVER to make this decision....and they CONFIRM THE GOAL!?!?!?! This is SCANDALOUS! Absolutely incredible!

62nd min: U.S. fans will be THRILLED to hear that BOLIVIA HAVE SCORED against Panama! As it stands the United States are THROUGH to the knockout stage! It's Bolivia's first goal of the tournament!

57th min: Wow, Joe Scally is going to come back on! Shaq Moore had been called from the bench and had readied himself to enter the match.

Antonee Robinson, who is having an unbelievable match, recovers to lock down a Facundo Pellistri run to the end line and win a goal kick. He's been the best player on the pitch.

55th min: This is bad. Joe Scally is down and needs treatment for the second time this match. You wonder if this means his day is done. Already in for an injured Sergino Dest, there aren't many options at left-back. Tim Weah is suspended, and Shaq Moore will come into the game.

This is an injury at the thinnest possible position for the U.S. Absolutely brutal.

50th min: Chance, Uruguay! The South American side comes close as Nicolas de la Cruz heads on frame off a corner, but it misses the target wide of the near post.

47th min: Weston McKennie has the first shot of the second half but he slips as he fires on the turn and rifles it miles over the crossbar.

2nd half kickoff: The match is back under way at Arrowhead Stadium, with no changes for either side. The U.S. started hot in the first half but Uruguay built themselves into the game. Who will start on the front foot in the second half?

HALFTIME: What a wild 45 minutes we've just witnessed. From a pure football perspective, it was a quality 45 minutes from the United States, as they played with tenacity and boldness on both sides of the pitch. They were the better side throughout, but failed to get a goal for their efforts.

Yet the talking point is, unquestionably, the referee. Peruvian official Kevin Ortega, who has officiated just six senior international matches in his career, has made numerous decisions which have not just been controversial, but borderline scandalous and have some fans calling into question the integrity of the match.

Unfortunately for the United States, as it stands, they are OUT of the Copa America as Panama currently lead Bolivia 1-0 in the other match. The U.S. must match or better Panama's result to advance.

45+3 min: A yellow card is shown to Darwin Nunez for a hard foul on Joe Scally near the Uruguay bench. It's a really vicious foul that has left Scally down injured and needing treatment. He kicked Scally hard in the leg as the U.S. defender attempted to shield the ball out of play.

Nunez is the first Uruguay player to be booked so far this tournament.

45th min: The fourth official shows five minutes of stoppage time, which is utter nonsense. The FOX play-by-play broadcaster John Strong says they've calculated at least nine minutes of stoppage for multiple injuries. It's utterly shocking to watch this play out.

42nd min: This referee has absolutely no clue what's going on. Minutes after playing advantage with a yellow card in his hand, he blows his whistle for a handball on Uruguay in the attack third while Christian Pulisic is dribbling one-on-one up the sideline. Suddenly, advantage counts for nothing. This is reaching catastrophic levels of officiating, as he is making mistakes you would be upset about from a rec league official being paid $10 an hour.

40th min: Folarin Balogun is down and looks like he might be done for the day. He has his head in his hands, and appears he cannot continue. Ricardo Pepi will come into the match. A big blow to the U.S. attack, as Balogun has looked sharp playing within this attacking three.

38th min: Chance, Uruguay! Darwin Nunez puts the best chance of the match wide! A cross from the left is threaded perfectly through the trees, and comes to Nunez at the near post but his first-time hit misses the target!

36th min: Folarin Balogun and Ronald Araujo are both down on the ground holding their heads after a big tackle, and we've reached "this game is out of control" status.

Looks like Araujo has a bloody nose as a result of the tackle.

33rd min: WHAT IS HAPPENING?!? The referee whistles to stop play and show Chris Richards a yellow card, pulling the card out of his pocket. When Uruguay attempt to play on, he incredulously motions to play advantage with the card in his hand and Uruguay nearly score!

Had that resulted in a goal for Uruguay, it would have been scandalous! This referee is entirely out of his depth!

28th min: Chance, USA! Folarin Balogun is threaded through up the middle, and he's taken down in the 18-yard box, but the offside flag is up to nullify the chance! That's a penalty if he's onside, but he looked to be leaning seeing it live.

Now there's concern for both players involved, as Balogun needs medical attention as does Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Both are up and continue after a long delay. This is a crunching game.

24th min: The game has been paused for a very urgent medical situation involving Uruguay defender Maxi Araujo, who is unconscious after a clash of heads with Tim Ream in the U.S. penalty area. Uruguay players rush over to ensure their teammate does not swallow his tongue. There's a hush over Arrowhead Stadium while this is handled.

Araujo is stretchered off in a neck brace, but he looks to be moving his hands as he's removed from the pitch, which is a very good sign. He's replaced by Cristian Olivera, and Tim Ream is ready to continue.

A replay is eventually shown, and it appears that Araujo was injured not on the duel with Ream, but on the landing, as he landed straight on his neck. That's quite scary, and we'll hope he's ok.

22nd min: The U.S. has matched Uruguay's intensity and skill so far, but they have yet to find the opener.

Meanwhile, Panama have just taken a 1-0 lead over Bolivia, meaning as it stands the United States are OUT of the Copa America.

16th min: Tyler Adams and Matias Olivera are both down in serious pain after a 50-50 ball in midfield. Olivera seems to get there first, but he ends up standing on Adams' leg. In the end, it's the U.S. midfielder who's booked, and he's utterly bewildered with the decision.

13th min: Chance, USA! After a Uruguay turnover in midfield, Gio Reyna sends a low fizzed cross from out wide on the left, and it's very troublesome for Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet but he gets down to stop it just inches before Folarin Balogun latches onto the end of it for a tap-in! Close!

12th min: The crowd is into this one early as Christian Pulisic readies to take a U.S. corner. It's sent in dangerously but no American can get on the end of it.

7th min: Tim Ream puts a header over the crossbar from a free-kick. The U.S. has started this match well, but there's a very long way to go.

2nd min: GOODNESS. Chris Richards nearly leaves a back-pass for Matt Turner short and sends Darwin Nunez in on goal but Turner manages to just barely get to it first and boot it away. Can't be making mistakes like that.

1st min: There's an early wrinkle for the United States as the wingers, Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna, are flipped from their traditional positions. Gio Reyna is on the left, and Pulisic is on the right. We'll see how long they play inverted before moving back to their regular spots.

For what it's worth, Pulisic plays on the right for the most part at the club level.

30 mins to kickoff: This game will be won or lost for the U.S. in two areas. First, the midfield absolutely has to step up. Weston McKennie is the X-factor for the USMNT, and the only way they win tonight is if the Juventus man has a good match.

Additionally, Joe Scally will have to be strong tracking back to cover his space. He has been weak at times covering the space left behind when he gets forward, and with Gio Reyna on the wing and likely cutting inside at times, Scally will find himself on the overlap occasionally. If Uruguay exploit this successfully, the U.S. will lose.

45 mins to kickoff: After the Panama defeat, a downtrodden Christian Pulisic said the U.S. will need to play "the game of their lives" to beat Uruguay. We've seen the U.S. rise to the occasion with grit against strong opponents, but they have yet to achieve a statement win under Gregg Berhalter. Will this be enough motivation for tonight's event?

1 hour to kickoff: The USMNT lineup for the nation's biggest game since the 2022 World Cup is in, and the most notable news is that goalkeeper Matt Turner is indeed fit to start. That's somewhat surprising given the language used around his status, but Gregg Berhalter successfully played it close to his vest.

To replace the suspended Tim Weah, Berhalter has elected to deploy Gio Reyna out wide, bringing Yunus Musah into midfield in the only change from the Panama lineup. Haji Wright, Brenden Aaronson, and Josh Sargent will have to wait a little longer.
