Golden Retriever Sneaks Into Neighbor's Pool Like a Sleuth and Goes for a Summer Swim

Some dogs will stop at nothing to get a little extra time in the water no matter what time of year it happens to be, but especially during the summer when the temperatures are high. There are some dogs who absolutely thrive in the water; they swim like total naturals and have to be dragged out of the pool or the doggy splash pad. I'm always glad my pup is having so much fun playing in the sprinkler with my kid, but the time to go inside always comes eventually (much to her disappointment).

One dog on TikTok managed to find a way around his allotted swimming time by sneaking into the neighbor's pool, and it's almost unbelievable how sneaky he was in order to make it happen. Is this a dog, or a professional spy?

The video was shared by @thegoldenzeppole on Sunday, June 30, and I am seriously impressed by this Golden Retriever 's sneaky ways. Zeppole needed to get to the pool ASAP and was determined to make it happen. What's a little breaking an entering in the grand scheme of things?

In the beginning, we just see the dog standing proudly in the pool, all alone... and then the rest of the video (which seems to have been taken from outdoor security camera footage) shows exactly how Zeppole ended up there in the first place.

Though the pool is fenced in, that fence was clearly no match for this determined pup, who discovered that the gate was just slightly open — enough for Zeppole to fit through and jump in the pool with a big splash!

This guy was even swimming underwater , which is was truly caught the attention of those watching, but apparently, this is something he does often. Who knew?

    Can Dogs Swim Underwater?

While it certainly seems uncommon, Zeppole isn't the only dog who can swim underwater — in fact, dogs actually can hold their breaths!

As DogTime points out, dogs are born with something called the mammalian diving reflex , or the evolutionary ability to hold their breath underwater for about 5-10 seconds before they need to come up for air.

Dogs are also able to dive about six feet into the water, though some can be trained to dive as deep as 15 feet. Among the dog breeds who are best at underwater swimming are Labradors, Newfoundlands, Sheepdogs, Landseers, and, like Zeppole, Retrievers, so it's no surprise that he's able to swim like this.

He should probably stick to swimming when his humans are around, though...  and maybe ask the neighbors for permission to use their pool next time!
