It’s July and that means training camp begins this month, and until there’s a resolution (or not), the big topic in DC football is going to be the idea of Brandon Aiyuk coming to the Commanders.
“It's a quarterback right there, I'm thinking about what I could do with him. I'm thinking about if the Niners don't want me to come back to play with them, I'm thinking about what I could do. I know what I could do,” Aiyuk said on a recent podcast, the ‘him’ of course being Jayden Daniels.
So, running the three-man weave on July 1, Cakes, JP and EB dove in: is Aiyuk worth trading for?
“It is wild how they seem virtually inseparable; they’re together all the time, especially for guys that haven’t played together in a few years,” EB said, with Cakes adding that “those guys have a full-fledged bromance blossoming.”
That said, EB understands Aiyuk is in the middle of a contract negotiation so it may all be just posturing, but…
“Maybe the Niners just have looked at Aiyuk and said, do we really want to pay him $26 or $28 million per season when we just drafted Ricky Piersall out of Florida, we're paying Deebo north of $20 million, and just re-upped Christian McCaffrey?” Cakes asked. “There’s only so much money that they can spread around on the offense, and they made an offer but Aiyuk feels like he’s worth more. But he’s in an environment where they like to run the ball a lot, and his targets and catches are gonna be somewhat capped. I think he and his agent probably feel if they went to a more pass-happy offense, that he would put up numbers close to Tyreek Hill or Ja’Marr Chase or Justin Jefferson.”
“But is he better than Terry McLaurin?” JP asked bluntly, before reading Aiyuk’s stat sheet.
