Summer Thunder 2024: What you need to know

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — On July 4th, a musical firework show will light up the sky in Blair County as part of Summer Thunder at Delgrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash .

The theme for this year’s event is “A Ride Through History,” as they’re celebrating the Herschell-Spillman Carousel’s 100th birthday. There will be a musical pre-show starting at 9 p.m., with the fireworks set to go off at 10 p.m.

For the Fourth of July, the Laguna Splash Water Park will be open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Park rides and food stands will be open from Noon – 11:30 p.m. All rides will be closed during the fireworks show and select one will reopen afterward.

WTAJ will be livestreaming the show or you can attend the event and tune into 98.1FM to hear the soundtrack. You’ll be able to watch the full fireworks show in the video player above.

There is no cost to come into the park to watch the fireworks show. However, if you want to enjoy the rides or use the splash park you can buy tickets on the Delgrosso’s Park website .

The carousel, which is being celebrated at this year’s event, is the only ride still in operation from when Fred DelGrosso purchased Bland’s Park in the fall of 1946. It’s the centerpiece of the amusement park, with three rows of a dozen horses each.

It was built in 1924 by the Spillman Engineering Corporation in North Tonawanda, NY.

All the horses on the carousel are hand-painted and hand-carved. They also represent a variety of breeds with the lead horse having a distinct red sash . In case you didn’t know, the lead horse is also affectionately nicknamed Ferdinand.
