COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – The Ohio National Guard marked a turning point in America’s military history Monday with the 2024 Freedom to Serve campaign.

This marks the 76th anniversary of President Truman ordering the integration of the U.S. military and federal workforce.

Monday’s ceremony shared the story of four African American Medal of Honor recipients from Ohio who served in the Civil War in segregated units.

Their stories reflect how they overcame historic barriers.

The commemoration also marked the 1948 passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which enabled women to serve as permanent regular members of the U.S. Armed Services.
