RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — T he Russell County Commission voted to have July 5th become a holiday.

The decision to extend the holiday comes as Independence Day falls on a Thursday. The Board of Commissioners in Russell County voted to make Friday, July 5th a paid holiday for employees of Russell County.

Rod Costello, the Russell County Chairman shared with WRBL what the extended holiday will look like for Russell County citizens.

“All Russell County buildings will be closed. That means the courthouse judicial center, the probate tag office, all of those officers are going to be closed. But if you had normal trash pickup on July 4th, July 5th, our sanitation department is going to be working and they’re going to go ahead and pick up trash for the July 4th and fifth day excuse me, the Thursdays and Fridays pickup days.”

The purpose of the holiday extension is to stand as a token of appreciation for the Russell County employees.

“There’s not a lot of things that we as a commission can do for our employees as much as we want to do for our employees.”  Costello says.  “I think it was an easy decision with the holiday of July 4th falling on a Thursday… why stress out our employees that were traveling in or are wanting to enjoy the holiday the best they could with their families.”

Costello hopes the four-day weekend recharges Russell County employees for their return to work Monday, July 8th.
