    DOH reports six travel-related dengue cases in Hawaii

    HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Hawai‘i Department of Health has confirmed six travel-related dengue cases in the state, so far in 2024, as of Monday.

    There is one case on Maui and five cases on O’ahu.

    The individuals exposed to dengue acquired the virus from various locations around the world.

    Symptoms of dengue:

    • Fever
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Rash
    • Severe body Aches

    According to DOH, symptoms usually last two to seven days. Although severe and sometimes life threatening, most people recover after about a week.

    DOH advises those who have travelled to an area where dengue is common and are experiencing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider.

    Precautions to take when travelling to an area with dengue, according to Centers for Disease Control:

    • Using an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent.
    • Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
    • Sleeping in an air-conditioned room or room with window screens or under an insecticide-treated bed net.

    DOH reminds travelers that due to some countries reporting increased numbers of cases, it is important to review country-specific travel information for dengue risk and prevention measures for certain countries, four to six weeks before you travel.

    Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to breed. Eliminating mosquito-breeding sites in and around your home is a good practice. Common breeding sites at home are buckets, water-catching plants, small containers, planters, rain barrels and cups of water.
