DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Independence Day is still days away, but firework displays have already started across the region, what’s fun for some is not fun for others, especially our four-legged friends.

Blue Chip Animal Refuge in Luzerne County says they’ve already received several strays as a result of fireworks going off.

Now, they’re sharing an important reminder about keeping your pet safe.

For some people, it’s a fun way to celebrate Independence Day, but for Fido, fireworks can spark fear.

“The Fourth of July is the biggest day for strays here. We get about 10 every Fourth of July. And it’s because they get scared they break through screens they do whatever they have to do to get out of the noise,” said Blue Chip Animal Refuge President Margaret Bart.

Bart says the sound can make dogs anxious, causing them to flee.

“A lot of dogs get absolutely terrorized they would do anything they feel like they wanna jump out of their skin,” Bart added.

Blue Chip says there are a few ways you can make sure your pet stays safe during this stretch of holiday celebrations.

“Try to keep noise in the background so if you’re home turn the TV on or the radio,” Bart continued.

Bart also suggests putting a tight shirt like a onesie on your dog or wrapping them in a blanket.

“Anything that makes them feel comfortable and tightly held,” Bart explained.

Pet sedatives are also an option. But the best way to ensure your furry friend is protected?

“I would just try to stay home with them. You just have to be mindful that the Fourth of July is here and protect them the best you can,” Bart stated.

Bart says while the Fourth of July is the most popular time for fireworks, people set them off well before and after the holiday, so pet owners should keep that in mind.
