The New Jersey Sessions is a testament to the vitality of jazz brought to life by pianist Jeremy Monteiro and tenor saxophonist Sean Hong Wei, with the iconic Houston Person adding his legendary sound to a couple of notable tracks. The album serves up a rich tapestry of eight jazz standards (and one original from Monteiro) which provide a road map to blending traditional jazz elements with a modern sensibility by an ensemble which includes trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Evan Sherman in addition to the two principals.

Hermetic Fever, performed by Joshua Gerowitz (guitar, EFX) and Louis Lopez (trumpet, EFX) is a spellbinding tapestry of sound that might have the listener questioning reality. Inspired by the Hermetic tradition of philosophy, practical magic and alchemy, these musical alchemists embark on an improvised journey that transcends genres and expectations. Clocking in at 37 minutes without any filler tracks, this dynamic duo has concocted a musical potion that is equal parts mystic ritual and fever dream, promising an enigmatic listening experience.

The name of tenor and soprano saxophonist Bob Berg seems to be mentioned less frequently over time, but he was one of the most gifted saxophonists in the generation that followed in the wake of John Coltrane. His passion, timing and technique were among the best. In some ways, his style was similar to Michael Brecker; he moved in similar circles but seems to have slipped into the shadows as Brecker gained significant popularity.

Firstly, Michael Ruth goes by the name of Rich Ruth. When asked about the conversion from Michael to Rich, Ruth had a clear and simple response "I chose to go by Rich Ruth because I felt it had a more distinct ring to it and Rich is my mother's maiden name as well as my middle name." As for influences, at times it seems Ruth believes he is channeling sounds and vibrations from a higher order. When citing the inspiration for music he performed or recorded in the past, Ruth stated "I constantly experiment with sound until it reflects the way I am feeling, and attempt to sculpt something meaningful from it." As for more earth-bound influences, he has acknowledged being inspired by the meditative pieces of artists including John Coltrane and Keith Jarrett.

Cradled Cravings is a hard-nosed debut from a typical European quintet these days—The Gatherers with musicians from different countries and led by Slovenian saxophonist Luka Zabric. Over on this side of the Atlantic, new releases continue to drop; this time from Tarbaby (Orrin Evans, Eric Revis & Nasheet Waits), Dave Douglas' Gifts and underground avant-garde pianist John Blum.

In his performing career, pianist Chad Edwards has probably heard more wisecracks and quips about his actually being a retired rocket scientist than there are stars in the Cosmos. However, rest assured—as he has done in his parallel and now formal career, and is presented in Wyoming Roads—his keyboard and compositional talents certainly stand on their own. It is a fine nine track collection of five Edwards' originals and four Great American Songbook classics, with the pianist backed up by fine L.A. personnel.
