Drink too much on Fourth of July? AAA offers free tows to keep drunk drivers off the roads

Iowans who can't safely get behind the wheel after a day of holiday drinking have another option to get home: AAA is offering a service to keep impaired rivers off the road over the holiday.

The service is also available in Iowa, Nebraska and nine other states. AAA - The Auto Club Group has provided the Tow to Go program for over 25 years, keeping nearly 30,000 impaired drivers off U.S. roadways over its history.

Here's everything you should know about the Tow to Go service for the Fourth of July.

When is AAA's Tow To Go program available in Iowa?

The Tow to Go service starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday and lasts until 6 a.m. July 8. The rides are for one person and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.

Does AAA Tow to Go service cost money?

All rides are free and confidential to AAA members and non-members. Appointments cannot be scheduled in advanced. It is designed as a safety net for those who didn't plan ahead, according to AAA.

“By providing this program, AAA gives drivers no excuse for driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol or impairing medications,” said Brian Ortner, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Please plan ahead by asking a friend to be your designated driver or use a ride-sharing service. If those plans fall through, you can call Tow to Go and AAA will arrange for a safe ride for you.”

How to schedule AAA's Tow to Go service?

You can call 855-2-Two-2-GO or 855-286-9246 to arrange for a tow. Service may not be available in some rural areas or during severe weather.
