CHESTERFIELD — This year, Chesterfield County reached a milestone. On May 25, 1749, the county was formed from a portion of Henrico County. Chesterfield celebrated its 275th anniversary with special events and activities. The celebration continues with the selection of Chesterfield's first-ever mascot. The county’s Sports, Visitation and Entertainment Department needs the public’s help in spreading the word and casting ballots.

County employees submitted ideas for “Cole,” the official name of the future mascot and a play on the county’s rich coalmining history. From the submissions, a committee picked the top four potential mascots: a raccoon, a chipmunk, a retriever and a bear.

Through Wednesday, July 10, individuals may cast a vote at experiencechesterfield.com for which animal they would like to see become Chesterfield's mascot. There will also be bonus votes available via the Experience Chesterfield Instagram account on Tuesday, July 9.

“We are thinking outside the box when it comes to promoting and creating a sense of place for our residents and visitors in Chesterfield with the creation of the ‘Cole’ mascot,” J.C. Poma, executive director of the Sports, Visitation and Entertainment Department, said. “’Cole’ will further define Chesterfield’s mission as a family-friendly community destination and give us yet another resource to engage with people across the county about the amenities, activities and events we have to offer.”

“Cole” will be found at numerous special events throughout Chesterfield to help promote the county’s miles and miles of trails, its deep and rich history, family-friendly activities and much more.

“We are on the move when it comes to getting residents and visitors alike to experience Chesterfield,” Jim Holland, Chesterfield Board of Supervisors Chair (Dale District), said. “’Cole’ is going to make for a wonderful addition to our tourism and entertainment efforts, and I encourage the community to help us choose the right mascot for our county.”

Will it be Cole, the chipmunk? Cole, the bear? Cole, the raccoon? Or Cole, the retriever? The county knows it is a tough choice, so to help you in your decision-making, they developed fun images and descriptions. Please note, the images are for visual purposes only.
