Anthony Gordon Premier League stats and injury history speak volumes amid Liverpool transfer links

Anthony Gordon has been the name on Liverpool's lips over the last few days. As Newcastle struggled to achieve Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) compliance by June 30, the prospect of a transfer was raised — and while it now looks less likely to come to fruition, his Premier League statistics speak volumes .

There's some disagreement about who initiated the contact over Gordon, although it should be obvious that the proposal to include Jarell Quansah would not have come from the Liverpool side . But regardless of whether Arne Slot actively sought out the deal, it's not hard to see why the possibility was considered.

The nuts and bolts of the transfer were always likely to be complicated , with Newcastle requiring a massive sale to really move the PSR dial given that much of Gordon's original purchase price was yet to be accounted for in the books. That's not to mention the player's Everton past .

Liverpool also already boasts a number of talented left-wingers. Luis Diaz is one, albeit with an uncertain future, and there's also plenty of excitement about potentially seeing Cody Gakpo back in that role at club level.

But in an isolated sense, Gordon is exactly the kind of player Liverpool loves to sign. At 23, he already has some very impressive Premier League stats.

Last season was undoubtedly Gordon's most productive campaign. He scored 11 times for Newcastle and registered 10 assists, one of just five players to hit double figures in both columns ( Mohamed Salah was another).

Prior to that, Gordon suffered some really bad luck in front of goal in 2022/23. Netting three times for Everton before his mid-season transfer, he would not score again in the Premier League until the final day of the season, although at that stage he was yet to become a mainstay in the Newcastle line-up.

As for 2021/22, his breakout season in a poor Everton side, he managed four goals and two assists in 35 Premier League appearances. There's no doubt that his output has scaled up as he has matured and moved to a better team.

Gordon's overall record therefore stands at a relatively underwhelming 19 goals and 13 assists in 116 Premier League matches. He has 21 yellow cards across that period as well.

But the bigger picture of his development and trajectory, shown by his stats last season, underline why Liverpool would be interested in bringing Gordon to the club he supported as a child. His injury record would also meet with approval from the Anfield recruitment department.

According to Transfermarkt , Gordon has missed just eight games through injury in his senior career. Young, resilient and on a steep upward curve, Liverpool would be wise to keep an eye on the situation, even if Newcastle is out of the PSR woods for now.
