Dr. Tan reports that studies have found consuming 26g of fiber per day lowers the risk of developing diabetes by 18%. So, his patients have been inquiring whether a supplement like psyllium can provide similar benefits. He reveals that studies have shown taking psyllium fiber reduced A1c levels, fasting glucose, and insulin. Additionally, the group taking psyllium also lost 6 pounds. These results were seen when 7g of psyllium was mixed with 100ml of water and taken 15 minutes before lunch, and 3.5g of psyllium was mixed with 100ml of water 15 minutes before dinner. He says, “Suggesting that adding psyllium so your dietary intervention for diabetes may aid and glucose control, as well as weight loss.” That’s great to hear! Even if we don’t have diabetes, perhaps it may help prevent us from ever developing it. One audience member asked if taking it by pill was as beneficial as a powder, and Dr. (Tan) responded, “Both are ok.” That’s good news for anyone who struggles with odd textures.

    Psyllium Supplement Side Effects

When starting fiber supplements like inulin, psyllium, or methylcellulose, it’s common to experience bloating and gas initially. To minimize these side effects, starting with a small amount is recommended. If you have a history of bowel blockages or diseases like Crohn’s , it’s essential to consult your healthcare provider before you begin. And because fiber can lower blood sugar levels, medications for conditions like diabetes may need to be adjusted. It can also interfere with the absorption of other drugs, so it’s crucial to talk to your healthcare provider before starting. Drinking plenty of water with these supplements can prevent choking, and staying well-hydrated throughout the day can help prevent constipation.

While eating a nutrient-rich, high-fiber diet is always ideal, it’s good to know that this supplement may also assist. Some days, we need all the help we can get.
