Costco’s recent switch in rotisserie chicken packaging has not gone unnoticed. The public outcry is widespread, with social media platforms inundated with expressions of frustration. Some have even pledged a boycott.
One man in particular has been a vocal opponent of these new plastic bags, and his unrelenting protests may have forced the change he desired. Watch him taking a victory lap and this video from June 27:
This man’s (@oldjewishmen) dedication to Costco’s chickens is unparalleled. Rumor has it that he even printed the barcode for these birds on a T-shirt to shield them from LED light. While his commitment is commendable, one can’t help but wonder if it’s more of a fashion statement than a health concern, especially now that he’s exposing himself to LED light. But one thing is certain: he hasn’t held back his frustration with the chicken’s new plastic bags.
Like many customers, he’s been vocal about his feelings on the matter since they switched from sturdy packaging to flimsy plastic. However, as Julia (@ qveenjulia ) shows us, he was pleasantly surprised to find his rotisserie chickens in their original containers. Oh, happy day! But does this mean that Costco is ditching the bags? Not necessarily. It may be that they are just using up old containers. This change, which is likely to continue in the future, came as a way to reduce waste, with Costco saying these bags would save over 17 million pounds of resin each year. However, with many people expressing dissatisfaction with the new packaging, it’s possible they have bowed to consumer pressure, especially outspoken customers like this one.
People understood where this man was coming from. Viewer @DavidC responded, “I saw a video that pointed out that the new bag doesn’t have any indication of the type and source of the plastic, if it’s recycled or not, and that sort of stuff, so it’s not trivial stuff.” Fair enough, no one wants chemicals leaching into their chicken. Viewer @BriannaJellison remarked, “Omg, I just left Costco, and ours is in the bag! I hate the bags! When will they all switch back to the containers?” It’s a good question, as many have reported they have leaked in their cars. Viewer @JohnSmith shared, “My wife used to have to work in the chicken room and got out of there after they switched to plastic bags. She hated the plastic bags and transferred out!” It’s interesting to know that frustration extends beyond the customers.
Although we may see these bags in the foreseeable future, at least the chickens still cost less than five dollars. With the price of everything else continuing to rise, it’s a small price to pay for significant savings.
