About a month and a half after the surprise unveiling of her upcoming tequila brand, three-time Grammy Award winner Megan Thee Stallion shared details about the unexpected "Queen Bey" inspiration behind her latest venture. In an interview on Shannon Sharpe's "Club Shay Shay" podcast, Megan mused on her recently released album, friendship with Cardi B and commitment to authenticity in her day-to-day life. When asked about her years-long legal dispute with
1501 Certified Entertainment — which she successfully fought to become an independent artist — the "HISS" rapper got serious:
"When I was in the situation I was in and I wanted to get out of it, they told me you need to do this on your own. You already know what it is, you got all the tools [...] You should be able to figure out how get out here and be your own boss."
Talking with friends in the music industry, Megan says she got helpful advice on where to maneuver next:
"Beyoncé is the person who actually inspired me to get my own tequila. I used to be the cognac queen. I'm still the cognac queen! But as much as I used to enjoy cognac and promoted a lot of people's liquor brands, she was like, ‘The next time I see you, you better have your own. You need to have your own alcohol.'"
Though Beyoncé's involvement in the beverage industry has been limited to non-alcoholic brands like Pepsi and Lemon Perfect, her proximity to lucrative booze ventures can't be overstated. Her husband, Jay-Z, made a large chunk of his $2.5 billion net worth off alcohol sales, selling his stakes in Armand de Brignac Champagne and D’USSE Cognac for $315 million and $750 million respectively over the past few years. Elsewhere, we've seen successful artist-backed launches like Drake's Virginia Black Whiskey , Nick Jonas' Villa One Tequila and Quavo's recently debuted White X Cognac . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocBhZomiXuk&t=347s&ab_channel=ClubShayShay

What to Expect from Megan's Tequila Brand

Megan first announced her foray into the alcohol industry during a live interview with Adweek in April, telling a packed audience; "I create the things that I want to see." Since then, details have been few and far between, though keen-eyed sleuths have picked up on a handful of breadcrumbs. Users on Reddit speculated that the liquor might be called Chicas Divertidas — Spanish for "Funny Girls" — after the rapper debuted a VIP package under the same name on her tour. Lo and behold, Megan confirmed the rumors for the first time during her chat with Shannon Sharpe — but didn't go so far as to disclose a release date. In an Instagram video shared in May, fans got another fix when Chicas Divertidas was spotted backstage at a show in Chicago. Contained inside a twisted maroon decanter with embossed gold highlights, the bottle was topped off with a shiny cork protruding an interlocked heart and sword logo. As her self-titled album climbs to new heights and her tour winds to a close in August, we expect Megan's tequila to hit liquor store shelves any day now.
