A robotic dog that mimics the effects of heatstroke has been built to help warn dog owners of the dangers of leaving them unattended in cars.

'The robot was built using 3D-printed parts and fake animal fur by Finnish Petcare brand Musti Group as part of a new campaign by Finish agency Erma&Reinikainen .

The robot, which appears indistinguishable from a real dog, simulates heat stroke symptoms triggered by heat sensors placed inside the car.

Dogs should never be left alone in the car during summer, the campaign warns, because the temperature inside a car can get dangerously high - even on cloudy days.

Musti Group says it “wants to educate both dog owners and passers-by, who might come across dogs left in a car during summer.”

The robot simulates the symptoms of a heat stroke with its movements triggered by the temperature inside the car it’s placed in.

Aleksi Erma, co-founder of Erma&Reinikainen said: “When it comes to recognizing dangerous situations, real-life experience is the best form of education.

“By creating a tangible, cautionary example that people witness with their own eyes, we hope to increase awareness of how and when to act in these situations both as a dog owner and a passer-by.”

Lauri Laatikainen, the engineer in charge of the robotics at Interactive Inuits said: “A car left in the sun can quickly heat up to 80 degrees Celsius, which requires us to cool a compartment of the car to avoid overheating some of the hardware.

“One can only imagine what a real dog must feel like with its warm fur and no means of cooling itself.”

The robot dog is currently on a tour around Finland where it is stopping in places where dogs most commonly get heat stroke such as car parks and supermarkets.
