COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) — Getting kids who walk or ride their bikes to school is the focus of a state initiative.

The Safe Routes to School Program looks at ways to make the path to school a safe one for students who don’t ride a bus or are transported by a vehicle.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) , children in the 10- to 11-year-old age range are better at identifying safe places to cross the road and can focus on “pedestrian tasks”
    in comparison to younger kids.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Jack Marchbanks Tuesday announced an investment of more than $8 million in projects that focus on the safety of children who walk or bike to school.

ODOT is awarding funding through the program to support education initiatives and build infrastructure such as sidewalks and enhanced pedestrian crossings. This year, the program is funding 29 projects in 19 counties, including Mahoning.

The Struthers School District is getting a side path along the east side of 5th Street from Elm Street to Poland-Struthers Road. It’s a $500,000 project.

“Creating the opportunity for children to walk and bike to school is so important, and this funding will help communities ensure that these routes are as safe as possible,” said Governor DeWine. “Motorists should also do their part by paying attention, especially in and around schools.”

Safe Routes to School funding will cover projects like sidewalks, light poles, crosswalks, flashing beacons, curb ramps, educational materials and other items. Districts can apply for funding online.
