The New York Giants saw some major overturns on their roster and coaching staff during the 2024 offseason. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale stepped down and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson was fired.

On the roster, star running back Saquon Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney departed in free agency. They signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, respectively.

Losing those two key contributors enabled the New York Giants to make a move to acquire star pass rusher Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers. General manager Joe Schoen went back to basics this offseason, building from the inside out with a focus on the trenches.

There is no doubt that the New York Giants’ roster is stronger in 2024 than it was in 2023. But, there are still some holes that will take time to address. The biggest one is a long-term answer at quarterback.

Daniel Jones is in line to be the starter once again, but his leash is going to be short. His contract in 2025 is only guaranteed for injury, so we could see a similar situation to what unfolded with Derek Carr and Russell Wilson in the last two seasons.

After signing Drew Lock in free agency and passing on a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, a long-term option remains a need. The 2025 NFL Draft will provide them another chance to fill that void.

In a recent 2025 Mock draft, Matt Miller of ESPN has the New York Giants making a major move to address their quarterback need. After landing the No. 6 pick, he suggests the team makes a trade with the New England Patriots to land the No. 1 pick in the draft.

A similar package to what it cost the Carolina Panthers to trade up with the Chicago Bears was suggested. With the pick, the New York Giants take Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.

“The Giants threw 15 touchdown passes last season (fifth fewest in the league) and Daniel Jones is coming off a season-ending ACL injury, but the team is running it back this year. Veteran Drew Lock was added as a backup, but there still isn’t a long-term answer under center on this roster. So the front office might get aggressive in finding one. Beck — my QB1 in the class at the moment — is a steady pocket passer with a big arm and great processing speed. And he is primed for a breakout season after throwing 24 touchdown passes and completing 72.4% of his throws in his first season as a starter in 2023,” Miller wrote.

The New York Giants are going to be keeping a close eye on the quarterbacks in college football in 2024. They are almost assuredly going to be in the market for one given the current status of their depth chart.

Shedeur Sanders, Quinn Ewers, Connor Weigman and Riley Leonard are the other quarterback prospects Miller has going in the first round of his mock. Depending on how 2024 goes for Big Blue, all of them could be on their radar in some capacity.
